How to Become a Forward Deployed Engineer in India: Courses, Projects and Interview Prep
Quick answer: A forward deployed engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who works inside a customer's environment to build, deploy and fix AI or software systems until they work in production. To become one in India, learn production Python and SQL, then data integration, LLM application engineering (RAG, agents, evaluation), deployment, and customer-facing skills such as discovery and demos. Prove it with two or three deployed projects and one team capstone. Top labs ask for 4+ years of experience, while some Indian startups hire at 1 to 2 years, so many people enter through an adjacent title first. Pay data for India is thin: sources we checked showed typical figures of about Rs 10 to 25 lakh a year, with a long tail above that. This guide covers the day-to-day work, the skills, a step-by-step path, capstone ideas and interview preparation.
Key takeaways
An FDE is a hybrid. The role combines software engineering, applied machine learning and direct customer problem-solving. It is not the same as an ML engineer, a site reliability engineer (SRE) or a solutions engineer.
Experience requirements vary a lot. Anthropic's London posting asks for 4+ years in a technical, customer-facing role. A Y Combinator-listed Indian posting asks for 0.5 to 2 years.
Employers ask for proof of shipping. Production LLM experience, evaluation, deployment and communication appear in the postings we read, not just model knowledge.
The fastest route is projects that look like the job: messy data, a real integration, an evaluated AI layer, a deployment and a handover document.
Interview formats are not standardised. Prepare across five areas: production coding, integration design, LLM applications and evaluation, customer scenarios, and ownership stories.
Be wary of guarantees. No course can promise an FDE job. Check syllabus, projects, feedback and honest outcome claims.

What a forward deployed engineer is
A forward deployed engineer is a technical professional who works closely with a customer or business team to understand a real operational problem, then designs, builds, deploys and adapts a software or AI system inside that customer's environment. A product engineer builds one capability for many customers. An FDE takes the technology to one customer and makes it work against that customer's data, systems and constraints, then feeds what they learned back to the product team.
The role began at Palantir in the early 2010s, where it was called a "Delta", and spread to other companies as AI adoption grew, according to The Pragmatic Engineer. For the wider career picture, including how the title compares with adjacent roles, read our Forward Deployed Engineer career guide. This article focuses on how to get there.
The day-to-day work
Responsibilities differ by company, and we read three real postings to see how. Anthropic's Forward Deployed Engineer posting for London (listed on a venture investor's job board, posted 14 September 2026) describes work to:
build production applications with Claude models inside customer systems;
deliver artefacts such as MCP servers, sub-agents and agent skills that run in production workflows;
support deployments in enterprise environments;
identify repeatable deployment patterns and feed them back to product and engineering;
travel to customer sites for 25 to 50% of the time.
An Indian example is Peakflo's FDE posting (Y Combinator job board, India or remote, 1+ years): it combines voice and prompt design, agent workflows, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), system integration and Python and SQL automation for finance teams. Another, Supervity's Mumbai posting, mixes engineering with pre-sales work: technical discovery sessions, executive demos, and integration with enterprise systems such as SAP, with an on-site requirement. Postings like that show the title often carries sales-engineering duties in India, so read job descriptions closely.
The repeating loop
Understand the problem with the people who will use the system, separating what they asked for from what they need.
Inspect the environment: existing systems, APIs, databases, data quality, permissions.
Design a solution that fits the constraints, including deciding what not to build.
Build: the application, the integrations, the AI layer and an evaluation that shows whether it works.
Deploy with authentication, secrets, monitoring and the security rules the customer actually has.
Iterate and hand over, with documentation so the system survives without you.
An illustrative week
The following is our composite illustration based on the responsibilities above, not a real person's diary. Monday: a discovery call with a finance team about invoice exceptions, then mapping their export formats. Tuesday and Wednesday: building a retrieval pipeline over policy documents and a test set of 40 real questions. Thursday: fixing a failing integration with the customer's ERP export, then a live demo where a manager interrupts with an edge case. Friday: writing a runbook, logging what you learned for the product team, and planning next week's sprint.
FDE versus ML engineer, SRE and solutions engineer
| Role | Main job | Customer contact | Where the work happens |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forward deployed engineer | Make AI or software work for one customer, end to end. | Constant and direct. | Inside the customer's environment, with a feedback loop to the product team. |
| ML engineer | Build, train and operate models and ML systems for a product. | Occasional. | Your own company's infrastructure and data. |
| Site reliability engineer (SRE) | Keep your own company's services reliable: availability, latency, incident response and capacity. | Rare; mostly internal teams. | Your own production systems, often with on-call duty. |
| Solutions engineer | Design and demonstrate how a product fits a customer's needs, often before a sale. | Constant, pre-sales weighted. | Customer meetings and demos; rarely writes code on customer systems. |
| Software engineer | Build product features for many customers. | Usually none. | Your own codebase. |
Skills overlap: FDEs borrow deployment and reliability thinking from SREs, model and evaluation discipline from ML engineers, and communication craft from solutions engineers. The difference is that the FDE owns the outcome in someone else's environment. Our comparison of FDE, solutions engineer and AI engineer roles goes deeper.
What employers ask for
These are the requirements in the three postings we read. They are examples, not a standard.
| Posting | Experience | Technical asks | Other asks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anthropic, London (14 Sep 2026) | 4+ years in a technical, customer-facing role, or software engineering with consulting or product experience. Technical founders encouraged. | Production LLM experience including prompt engineering, agent development, evaluation frameworks and deployment at scale. Strong Python, ideally another language. Experience shipping production applications. | High agency under ambiguity, cooperation, strong communication for customer discovery, low ego. Enterprise-vertical background is a plus. |
| Peakflo (Y Combinator board), India or remote | 0.5 to 2 years of industry experience. Listed pay Rs 10 to 13 lakh. | Python and SQL, machine learning and NLP, LLM work with Gemini, GPT and Claude models, RAG, agent workflows, dashboards and data monitoring. | Collaboration with product and operations teams, clear documentation of workflows and designs. |
| Supervity, Mumbai | Years not shown in the text we read; it asks for production-ready code under client pressure. | Python or TypeScript, backend frameworks such as FastAPI or Node.js, cloud experience, integration with enterprise systems. | Executive communication, technical discovery, demos, on-site work. |
Technical skills that appear in postings
Production Python, plus SQL and one more language such as TypeScript.
Data and systems integration: messy data, REST APIs, authentication, pipelines.
LLM application engineering: prompt design, RAG, agents and tool use, structured output, guardrails.
Evaluation: test sets, regression checks, a measured pass rate, not a one-off demo.
Deployment and operations: containers, CI/CD, cloud, monitoring, security basics.
Soft skills that appear in postings
Discovery and listening: getting from "what they asked for" to "what they need".
Explaining trade-offs to people who do not share your assumptions, without hiding behind jargon.
Ownership under ambiguity, described in postings as "high agency".
Collaboration and low ego, including taking customer feedback and feeding it back to the product team.
Clear writing: runbooks, handover notes, status updates.
Common tools
Tools change faster than principles, so learn what each tool is for, then pick current ones. Common choices include:
| Job to do | Typical tools |
|---|---|
| Application code and APIs | Python, FastAPI or Node.js, TypeScript, Git and pull-request workflow, pytest |
| Data and storage | SQL and PostgreSQL, Pandas or Polars, vector search (pgvector, Qdrant) |
| Pipelines | Airflow or Prefect for scheduling, retries and backfills |
| LLM applications | Model APIs from several providers, retrieval pipelines, agent frameworks such as LangGraph, the Model Context Protocol (see our MCP server tutorial) |
| Evaluation and tracing | Golden test sets, LLM-as-judge with human checks, tracing tools such as Langfuse or LangSmith |
| Deployment | Docker, GitHub Actions or similar CI/CD, a major cloud (AWS, GCP or Azure), Terraform, monitoring and logging |
| Customer craft | Workflow maps, one-page scopes, demo scripts, runbooks |
Career and salary expectations in India
Career path. There is no standard ladder. Many people reach FDE work through an adjacent title first, such as software engineer, data engineer, solutions engineer, AI implementation engineer or applied AI engineer, then take on customer-facing delivery. Anthropic's London posting asks for 4+ years of experience, while Peakflo's Indian posting accepts 0.5 to 2, so the entry bar depends on the company and its stage.
Salary. Pay data for this title in India is thin and the sources disagree. On 17 October 2026, AmbitionBox showed a typical range of Rs 19.9 to 23.6 lakh a year for 0 to 7 years of experience (149 salaries, title "Forward Deployed Software Engineer"). Levels.fyi showed a median total compensation of about Rs 17.5 lakh with an undisclosed sample, and 6figr averaged Rs 16 lakh from only 3 profiles. Peakflo's posted range was Rs 10 to 13 lakh. Our FDE salary in India analysis shows every source with its sample size and explains why the numbers differ. Claims of Rs 35 to 55 lakh for freshers circulate online, and we could not trace them to a method.
Anthropic's London range of 225,000 to 255,000 pounds is a UK figure for a role with 4+ years of experience and says nothing about Indian pay.
A step-by-step path
Stage 0, prerequisites (2 to 6 weeks). Working knowledge of one language, ideally Python, plus basic SQL and Git. If you are starting from zero, begin with a Python course and a SQL course.
Stage 1, production engineering (about 2 weeks). Tests, logging, packaging, reviewed pull requests, and reading a codebase you did not write.
Stage 2, data and integration (about 3 weeks). Messy data from several sources, REST APIs, retries, authentication, scheduled pipelines.
Stage 3, LLM applications (about 8 weeks, the core). Prompting, RAG, agents and tool use, structured output, guardrails and evaluation. Build the evaluation before you tune the prompt.
Stage 4, ship and operate (about 4 weeks). Containers, CI/CD, secrets, monitoring, role-based access, and the privacy vocabulary buyers use, including India's DPDP Act.
Stage 5, customer craft (about 3 weeks). Discovery, scoping, estimation, demos and handover. Practise with a friend playing a sceptical manager.
Stage 6, proof (about 4 weeks). A team or solo capstone taken from discovery to deployment and handover, then written up.
Choose your starting point
| If you are | Start at | Focus on |
|---|---|---|
| A fresher with a CS or IT degree | Stage 0 or 1 | Shipping two small deployed projects before aiming at FDE titles. Apply to adjacent roles such as AI implementation or applied AI engineering. |
| A software engineer with 1 to 5 years | Stage 2 or 3 | LLM application engineering, evaluation and customer-facing practice. |
| A data analyst or data engineer | Stage 1 | Production code and deployment, since you already know SQL and data. |
| A data scientist or ML practitioner | Stage 3 | Integration, deployment and the customer craft your notebooks never needed. |
| A QA, support or SRE professional | Stage 1 or 3 | Your reliability and customer instincts transfer; add LLM applications and more programming depth. |
Courses, including at Fireblaze AI School
How to judge any course. Check five things: a syllabus you can read in full, projects you finish and can demonstrate, real feedback from practitioners, honest statements about outcomes, and a price you can see. Be sceptical of promises of a guaranteed FDE job. This is a new title, and hiring depends on your experience and the employer.
Several providers now offer FDE-style programs, so compare them on those five points rather than on branding. At Fireblaze AI School, which has trained learners in Nagpur since 2017, the relevant program is the Applied AI Forward Deployment Engineering Program:
| Detail | What the program page states |
|---|---|
| Length and format | 26 weeks, six phases, on weekends. Live online across India, or classroom in Nagpur only. |
| Fee | Rs 99,000 online and Rs 1,29,999 for the Nagpur classroom cohort, both including 18% GST. EMI is available. |
| Who it is for | Working IT professionals with 1 to 8 years of experience who already code. Not for absolute beginners or anyone seeking only a certificate. |
| Curriculum | Engineering foundations, data and systems integration, an eight-week AI application engineering phase (RAG, agents, MCP, evaluation, tracing, guardrails), deployment and operations, forward deployed craft, and a live capstone. |
| Capstone | A four-week team engagement for teams of three: problem discovery, architecture review, two sprints, a client-style demo, production deployment, handover documents and a presentation to an industry panel. |
| Weekly practice | Every student presents their work each weekend to a mock stakeholder and answers technical and business questions. |
| Support | Resume and portfolio preparation, technical interview preparation and mock interviews, and placement assistance. Fireblaze does not advertise placement guarantees. |
| Next cohort | 16 November 2026. |
What we cannot yet show. The program is new, with its first cohort starting on 16 November 2026, so there are no FDE graduates and no outcome data for it. For alumni of Fireblaze's other programs, the reviews page names former students and their current employers, including a data scientist at PayPal, an AI engineer at Northern Analytics and a data engineer at JIXE. Those alumni trained in other programs and we do not claim they hold FDE titles. Ask for the latest placement report during counselling, and see how placement assistance works.
Other ways in at Fireblaze.
Start with the self-paced RAG course or Agentic AI course (Rs 1,999 each, with a graded project and no placement assistance) to test the material first.
Build the data and ML foundation through the Post Graduate Program in Data Science and Analytics (6 months, Rs 89,000 including GST; Fireblaze is a NASSCOM partner for this program).
Students at partner colleges (KDK College of Engineering, YCCE, RTMNU and KITS Ramtek) can ask their training and placement office about campus programs.
Practise building under a deadline in the monthly Tech League, where teams get an industry problem and 21 days to build, and hear practitioners in the free Industry Talk Sessions.
Capstone projects to build
A good FDE project has a named user, a messy integration, an evaluated AI layer, a deployment and a handover document. Use public or synthetic data only. The ideas below are our suggestions, not reported industry projects.
Invoice exception assistant for a finance team. Ingest sample invoice exports with inconsistent formats, flag exceptions, and let an agent propose actions that a human approves. Show: parsing tests, an approval step, an error rate on a hand-labelled set.
Policy question-answering with citations (RAG). Answer staff questions over a policy library, show sources, and refuse when the answer is not in the documents. Show: a 40-question test set, a measured supported-answer rate, a refusal test.
Support ticket triage agent. Classify tickets, draft replies, and escalate uncertain cases. Show: confusion matrix, cost per ticket, an escalation rule and a tracing dashboard.
Hospital front-desk FAQ bot with privacy controls (synthetic data). Handle appointment and FAQ questions while redacting personal data and logging consent. Show: PII redaction tests and a retention policy, framed around DPDP concepts (not legal advice).
Logistics exception monitor. Poll a mock shipment API, detect delays, and message the right person with a recommended action. Show: retries, idempotency and a runbook.
Contract comparison tool. Compare two versions of a contract, highlight changes in plain language, and attach citations. Show: evaluation against a gold set of known changes.
For each, produce the same five artefacts: a one-page problem statement, an architecture diagram with trade-offs, an evaluation report, a deployed demo with logs, and a handover runbook. If you have no real client, pick a small organisation you know, such as a family business, a college department or an NGO, get written permission, and never publish their data. Our project guide has a README template and self-grading checklist you can reuse.
Interview preparation
What to expect. FDE interview formats are not standardised and vary by company, role and year. Interview-prep sites and candidate reports describe rounds such as coding, a decomposition or system-design problem and behavioural questions, but these are self-reported and describe different roles, so treat them as likely themes rather than a fixed format. AmbitionBox's page for the title lists reported questions that include writing a prompt for a given scenario, structured outputs and guardrails in LLM applications, which matches the LLM-application emphasis in job descriptions.
Five areas to prepare
Production coding. Clean Python, SQL with window functions, tests, and debugging someone else's code.
Integration and system design. Designing a pipeline across messy sources, with retries, auth and failure handling.
LLM applications and evaluation. RAG design, agent safety, how you would measure quality and catch regressions.
Customer scenarios. Discovery questions, scoping, and handling a stakeholder who changes the requirement.
Ownership stories. Examples of ambiguity you resolved, mistakes you caught, and feedback you acted on.
Ten practice prompts
These are practice prompts we wrote. They are not questions reported from any company's interviews.
A bank wants an assistant that answers staff questions from 2,000 policy PDFs. What do you ask first, and what would you build in week one?
Your RAG system answers confidently but sometimes cites the wrong document. How do you find the cause and prove the fix?
Design an agent that can send customer emails. What permissions, approvals and logs would you add?
Two systems give different customer counts. How do you decide which is right and what do you tell the customer?
Write a SQL query for each customer's 30-day retention. How would you check it is correct?
A pilot works in the demo but fails on real documents. List your first five checks.
The customer's security team forbids sending data to an external API. What are your options?
You discover the customer's requirement is wrong halfway through a sprint. What do you do?
How would you measure whether an AI feature saves time, without inventing numbers?
Describe a time you took over a system you did not build and made it reliable.
How to answer
Clarify first. Ask about users, data, constraints and what success looks like before proposing a design.
Think in constraints and trade-offs, including what you would not build and why.
Say how you would measure it. A test set, a metric and a plan for regressions turn an opinion into evidence.
Name the risks: privacy, security, hallucination and handover.
Speak plainly. Explain as you would to a manager who has not read the documentation.
Portfolio and resume
Lead with deployed systems, each with a one-paragraph problem statement, an architecture diagram and a link.
Report only results you measured, with the sample size. Never invent impact numbers.
Include a handover runbook and an evaluation report for at least one project. These are rarer than code and show you finish the job.
Be ready to give a ten-minute live demo and take interruptions.
A 12-month plan
Months 1 to 2: Python, SQL, Git, tests. Ship a small ingestion tool as a reviewed pull request.
Months 3 to 4: data integration and APIs. Build a scheduled pipeline across three sources.
Months 5 to 7: LLM applications. Build a RAG assistant with an evaluation suite, then an agent with approvals.
Months 8 to 9: deployment and security. Containerise, add CI/CD, monitoring and access control.
Months 10 to 11: customer craft. Run a mock discovery and demo, write a scope and a runbook for one project.
Month 12: capstone and interviews. Finish one end-to-end capstone, then practise the ten prompts above aloud.
If you already work as an engineer, compress the early months and spend the time on stages 3 to 5.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a forward deployed engineer do?
A forward deployed engineer works inside a customer's environment to understand a real problem, then builds, deploys and adapts a software or AI system to solve it, and feeds what they learn back to the product team. Day to day that means customer discovery, integration work, building an AI layer with evaluation, deployment and handover documentation.
How do I become a forward deployed engineer in India?
Learn production Python and SQL, then data integration, LLM application engineering (RAG, agents, evaluation), deployment and customer-facing skills such as discovery and demos. Build two or three deployed projects and one end-to-end capstone, then apply to forward deployed, AI implementation, solutions or applied AI engineering roles.
Can a fresher become a forward deployed engineer?
It is harder at the largest AI labs, whose postings ask for 4 or more years of experience, but some Indian startups hire at 0.5 to 2 years. Many freshers enter through an adjacent title such as software engineer, AI implementation engineer or applied AI engineer and grow into full forward deployed work.
How is a forward deployed engineer different from an ML engineer or SRE?
An ML engineer builds and operates models for their own company's product. A site reliability engineer keeps their own company's services reliable. A forward deployed engineer works in a customer's environment, owns the outcome there, and talks to customers constantly.
What skills do forward deployed engineers need?
Production Python and SQL, data and systems integration, LLM application engineering including RAG, agents and evaluation, deployment and operations, plus discovery, clear communication, ownership under ambiguity and good documentation.
What is the salary of a forward deployed engineer in India?
Data is thin and sources disagree. In October 2026 AmbitionBox showed a typical range of 19.9 to 23.6 lakh rupees a year for 0 to 7 years of experience, Levels.fyi showed a median of about 17.5 lakh, and an Indian job posting offered 10 to 13 lakh for early-career roles. Our salary analysis lists each source with its sample size.
Do I need a degree to become a forward deployed engineer?
Anthropic's posting asks for a bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. In practice, employers focus on shipped projects, production experience and communication, so a strong portfolio matters.
Which course should I choose?
Choose by syllabus, projects, feedback and honest outcome claims rather than promises. Fireblaze AI School offers a 26-week weekend Forward Deployment Engineering Program, live online across India or in the classroom in Nagpur, for people who already code. Its first cohort starts on 16 November 2026, so it has no graduate outcomes yet, and it does not guarantee jobs.
