Data Science After 12th in Nagpur: An Honest Guide for Students and Parents
Data science after 12th in Nagpur, stream by stream: real college fees, MHT-CET and IIT Madras routes, Nagpur job data and what to learn during college.
Every year, Nagpur families ask us the same question in June: can my child start data science after 12th, or is it too early?
The honest answer is yes, you can start. But not the way most ads suggest.
No six-month course turns a 12th-pass student into a data scientist. A degree still matters, your 12th stream decides which degrees are open to you, and Nagpur's job market for "data scientist" titles is smaller than people assume.
So we checked the facts on 8 November 2026. In this guide you'll get:
- Every real route from 12th to data science in Nagpur, with published fees
- The Maths Gate: which routes your stream opens or closes
- A total-cost table across four years, not just year one
- What Nagpur data jobs actually pay, and what to learn during college
Let's start.
Data science after 12th means choosing a degree that builds maths, statistics and programming (such as a BSc in Data Science, a BTech in AI and Data Science, or IIT Madras's online BS), then adding practical skills like Python, SQL and projects during college, so you're employable as a data analyst or junior data scientist at graduation.
Quick answer: data science after 12th in Nagpur (November 2026)
- G H Raisoni College of Commerce, Science and Technology lists a 3-year BSc Data Science at ₹1,35,000 total, affiliated with RTMNU, for 12th science students with Mathematics (Careers360, 2026).
- YCCE Nagpur's BTech in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (60 seats) admits through MHT-CET or JEE Main, and lists an institute-level quota fee of ₹1,73,801.
- IIT Madras's online BS in Data Science accepts any Class 12 stream through a 4-week qualifier; the foundation level costs ₹48,000 and the full BS ₹3.86 to 4.5 lakh (IIT Madras, November 2026).
- Indeed listed only 8 data scientist openings in Nagpur in August 2026, averaging about ₹4.0 lakh a year, so most freshers start as data analysts.
- Taking Mathematics in 12th keeps the most data science routes open; without it, IIT Madras's BS and an analyst path through BCom or BA plus Excel and SQL are the realistic options.

Can You Do Data Science After 12th? The Short, Honest Answer
Yes, you can start data science after 12th, but you start it through a degree, not a short course. A 12th-pass student can enrol in a BSc in Data Science, a BTech in AI and Data Science, or IIT Madras's online BS, and learn job skills alongside.
Here's why a degree still matters.
Most data job listings ask for a graduate degree. Data analyst and data scientist roles also need statistics and maths that take time to build. A short certificate on its own, at 18, rarely gets past an HR screen.
So is a data science course after 12th useless? No. A short course works well as an add-on to a degree, not a replacement for one.
And it doesn't mean you should wait until graduation to learn anything. It means the degree is the base, and skills are the second layer.
Think of it like this:
| Layer | What it gives you | When |
|---|---|---|
| Degree | Eligibility for jobs, maths and statistics base | Years 1 to 3 (or 4) |
| Skills | Python, SQL, Excel, Power BI, machine learning | Alongside the degree |
| Proof | Projects on GitHub, an internship, a portfolio | Years 2 and 3 |
Students who build all three layers graduate ready. Students who only have the degree usually need another 6 months of training after college.
Note: If anyone promises a "data scientist job after 12th" in exchange for a course fee, that's a sales line, not a career plan.
The Maths Gate: Eligibility for Data Science After 12th by Stream
The Maths Gate is our name for one simple rule: whether you studied Mathematics in 12th decides which data science degrees in Nagpur you can enter. Every BSc and BTech data science program we checked in Nagpur asks for Mathematics in 12th; IIT Madras's BS is the main exception.
Here's what each stream opens, based on the published eligibility we read on 8 November 2026:
| Your 12th stream | BSc Data Science (Raisoni, Tirpude) | BTech AI / Data Science (YCCE, RBU) | IIT Madras BS | Best realistic path |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Science with Maths (PCM or PCMB) | Open | Open, through MHT-CET or JEE Main | Open | Any of the three |
| Science without Maths (PCB) | Closed (Maths required) | Closed (Physics and Maths required) | Open; Class 10 Maths expected | IIT Madras BS, or a science degree plus analyst skills |
| Commerce with Maths | Closed at the colleges checked (science subjects required) | Closed | Open | IIT Madras BS, or BCom/BCA plus analyst skills |
| Commerce or Arts without Maths | Closed | Closed | Open; Class 10 Maths expected | BCom or BA plus Excel, SQL and Power BI |
Sources: Careers360 (G H Raisoni), Tirpude College, YCCE, Careers360 (RBU), IIT Madras admissions page, all read 8 November 2026. Eligibility changes; confirm with each college's current prospectus.
Three things stand out.
- Maths in 12th is the single biggest door-opener. If your child is in Class 11 and unsure, keeping Maths is the safest choice for a data career.
- PCB and commerce students are not locked out. IIT Madras's BS accepts any Class 12 stream. The analyst route works for commerce graduates too.
- "Data science" in a college name doesn't change the eligibility rules. Read the subject list on the prospectus, not the course title.
Pro tip: For the BCA route, ask the college directly whether Maths in 12th is compulsory. Nagpur students report different answers from different colleges, so get it in writing before paying.
BSc Data Science in Nagpur: What the Colleges Publish
A BSc in Data Science in Nagpur is a three-year undergraduate degree, usually affiliated with RTMNU, that teaches Python, statistics, machine learning and data tools from the first semester. It suits PCM students who want a data-focused degree without the cost or entrance exam of a BTech.
We found two Nagpur colleges with clear public details:
G H Raisoni College of Commerce, Science and Technology lists a BSc Data Science at ₹1,35,000 total for the general category, 36 months, 120 seats, affiliated with RTMNU (Careers360). Eligibility is 12th from the Maharashtra board (or equivalent) with three science subjects including Mathematics.
Tirpude College (an autonomous institute affiliated with RTMNU) runs a three-year BSc Data Science for students with Science and Mathematics in 12th, or a three-year MSBTE diploma (Tirpude College). Fees aren't on the course page, so ask the admission office.
Tirpude's published syllabus is a useful benchmark for any BSc Data Science you compare:
| Semester | Main subjects (Tirpude College) |
|---|---|
| 1 | Linear algebra, Python programming, data and information management |
| 2 | Data structures, principles of data science, operating systems |
| 3 | Java, quantitative methods, computer networking, advanced Excel |
| 4 | Data mining, machine learning, big data, research methods |
| 5 | React web development, data visualisation, deep learning |
| 6 | MongoDB, digital marketing analytics, project and deployment |
Notice something? SQL isn't a named subject on that list.
That's not a criticism of one college. Most degree syllabi are broad, and SQL is the one skill almost every data interview tests. It's the first thing we'd add during college.
Note: RTMNU also announced a post-HSC Diploma in Artificial Intelligence and Digital Media in May 2026 (The Hitavada). It's a diploma, not a degree, so check how employers and higher-study admissions treat it before choosing it over a BSc.
BTech in AI and Data Science in Nagpur Through MHT-CET or JEE
A BTech in AI and Data Science (or Computer Science with a Data Science specialisation) is a four-year engineering degree that Nagpur colleges fill through MHT-CET and JEE Main. It's the deepest technical route, and also the most expensive and competitive.
Here's what two Nagpur colleges publish:
- YCCE Nagpur offers a BTech in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science and a BTech in CSE (AI and Machine Learning), with 60 sanctioned seats each (2023-24 intake) (YCCE). Admission is through MHT-CET for Maharashtra candidates, or JEE Main or MHT-CET for all-India seats. YCCE lists ₹1,73,801 for institute-level quota seats (the page doesn't say per year; we read it as an annual fee); CAP-round fees range from ₹24,581 (SC/ST) to ₹1,99,581 (open category, boys), marked tentative for 2024-25.
- Ramdeobaba University (RBU) offers a four-year BE in CSE (Data Science) with 180 seats (Careers360). Eligibility needs Physics and Mathematics in 12th with at least 45% in the qualifying subjects (40% for Maharashtra backward class, EWS and PwD candidates), plus a non-zero MHT-CET or JEE Main score.
Here's how the BTech admission route works:
Who should pick this route?
Students with strong PCM marks who enjoy programming and want the option of software or machine learning engineering roles, not just analysis. A BTech also helps if you plan an MTech or an MS abroad later.
Who should think twice? Students who chose PCM under pressure and don't enjoy maths. Four years of engineering maths is a lot to sit through for a career that a BSc plus strong projects can also reach.
Important: Fee categories in CAP rounds depend on caste certificates, income and scholarships. Use the CAP fee for your category, not the headline number, when you budget.
IIT Madras BS in Data Science From Nagpur
IIT Madras's BS in Data Science and Applications is an online degree that any Class 12 pass student can apply for, regardless of stream or age, through a four-week qualifier instead of JEE. Classes are online and exams are in-person at proctored centres, so a Nagpur student can study from home.
The qualifier has four courses: English, Mathematics for Data Science, Statistics for Data Science, and Computational Thinking (IIT Madras). General-category students need at least 40% in each course and a 50% average in the qualifier exam. Applicants are expected to have studied Maths and English in Class 10.
Costs, per IIT Madras's fee structure for students joining from the January 2026 term (IIT Madras):
| Exit point | What you get | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation level | Foundation certificate | ₹48,000 |
| BSc level | BSc degree from IIT Madras | ₹2,86,000 to ₹3,10,000 |
| BS level | Four-year BS degree | ₹3,86,000 to ₹4,50,000 |
IIT Madras also offers fee waivers of up to 75% for learners whose family income is under ₹5 lakh a year, subject to income documents.
The application fee is ₹4,000 for General and OBC candidates, ₹2,000 for SC/ST or PwD (IIT Madras). Applications for the January 2027 term close on 29 January 2027.
Here's the honest trade-off.
The IIT Madras BS is rigorous and self-driven. There's no college campus, no attendance pressure and no classmates beside you. Many students take it alongside a regular degree at a Nagpur college for structure and campus life.
For PCB and commerce students who studied Maths in Class 10, it's the most credible data science degree that doesn't need Maths in 12th.

Data Science After 12th Commerce or Arts
Data science after 12th commerce or arts usually means one of two paths: IIT Madras's BS if you're strong in maths, or a BCom, BBA or BA degree combined with data analyst skills like Excel, SQL and Power BI. The second path leads to analyst roles first, which is where most Nagpur data careers start anyway.
Here's what that path looks like in practice:
- Pick a degree you'll actually finish. BCom, BBA or BA (Economics) all work. Economics and statistics papers help.
- Learn Excel properly in year 1. Pivot tables, lookups and charts. This alone makes you useful in any office.
- Add SQL in year 2. It's the most common skill in data job interviews.
- Add Power BI and basic statistics by year 3. Then build two or three dashboards on real business data.
- Add Python later, if you want to move from analyst towards data science.
Commerce students often have an advantage here. They already understand sales, accounts, GST and inventory, which is exactly the data Nagpur businesses ask analysts to work on.
For example: a BCom graduate who can turn a distributor's sales sheet into a Power BI dashboard showing which product sells in which taluka is more hireable locally than a BSc graduate with only theory.

The Four-Year Cost Table Parents Should See
The total cost of data science after 12th in Nagpur ranges from about ₹1.35 lakh for a BSc to about ₹7 lakh or more for a BTech at institute-level quota fees, before hostel, laptop and exam costs. Year-one fees hide most of the difference, so compare the full degree.
Here's our calculation from the published fees above. These totals are our estimates (published annual fee multiplied by years), not figures the colleges publish:
| Route | Published fee | Years | Estimated total tuition |
|---|---|---|---|
| BSc Data Science, G H Raisoni | ₹1,35,000 total | 3 | About ₹1.35 lakh |
| IIT Madras BS, BSc exit | ₹2,86,000 to ₹3,10,000 total | About 3 | About ₹2.9 to ₹3.1 lakh |
| IIT Madras BS, full BS | ₹3,86,000 to ₹4,50,000 total | About 4 | About ₹3.9 to ₹4.5 lakh |
| BTech AI and Data Science, YCCE (CAP, SC/ST) | ₹24,581 a year (tentative) | 4 | About ₹1 lakh |
| BTech AI and Data Science, YCCE (institute-level quota) | ₹1,73,801 (read as annual) | 4 | About ₹6.95 lakh |
| BTech AI and Data Science, YCCE (CAP, open boys) | ₹1,99,581 a year (tentative) | 4 | About ₹8 lakh |
Fees as published by each source; YCCE CAP figures are marked tentative for 2024-25. Fees usually rise each year, so treat totals as a floor.
What should parents take from this?
First, category matters enormously for a BTech: the same seat can cost about ₹1 lakh or about ₹8 lakh over four years.
Second, a cheaper degree plus focused skills can produce a similar first job. Nagpur data job listings ask for skills by name: in our review of Power BI developer jobs in Nagpur, SQL appeared in 6 of the 9 listings we compared.
Third, the course you add during or after college is a smaller cost than the degree. Full analyst and data science programs for Nagpur learners cost ₹75,000 to ₹89,000 at Fireblaze AI School, including GST (October 2026), and our data science course comparison lists other providers' fees too.
Data Jobs in Nagpur: What a Fresher Can Expect
Nagpur's data job market is small and analyst-heavy: Indeed showed 8 data scientist openings in Nagpur in August 2026 with an average advertised salary of about ₹4.0 lakh a year, compared with about ₹11.9 lakh across Maharashtra (Indeed Job Explorer, updated 6 August 2026).
The same Indeed page showed 6 data analyst openings in Nagpur averaging about ₹5.98 lakh. Both samples are small, so read them as direction, not precise pay.
That direction matters for a 12th-pass student planning four years ahead:
- Your first job title will probably be "analyst", not "data scientist". MIS analyst, business analyst, data analyst or BI developer are the common entry points.
- Pune, Mumbai, Hyderabad and remote roles pay more. If you're willing to move or work remotely after graduation, a deeper machine learning skill set pays off. See our guide to remote data analyst and AI jobs from Nagpur.
- Four years is a long time in AI. Tools change fast. Fundamentals like statistics, SQL and clear thinking about data don't.
Bottom line: plan for an analyst job first and a data scientist title second. It's the honest path, and it's a good one.
How to Become a Data Scientist After 12th: The 3-Year Proof Plan
The 3-Year Proof Plan is a simple schedule for building job-ready data skills during any degree: one core skill and one visible project each year, so you graduate with proof, not just a marksheet. It works for BSc, BTech, BCom and IIT Madras students alike.
Here's the plan:
| College year | Learn | Build (put it on GitHub or a portfolio) |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | Excel and Python basics; revise 12th-level statistics | One Excel dashboard and one Python notebook analysing a public dataset |
| Year 2 | SQL and Power BI | A SQL project on a sales or e-commerce database; one Power BI report |
| Year 3 | Machine learning basics, communication | One end-to-end project with a clear business question; a summer internship |
Three habits make the plan work:
- Use real data. Government open data, cricket statistics, or a family business's sales records are more interesting than textbook examples.
- Explain every project in plain words. Interviewers ask "why this chart?" and "what would you do next?" more than they ask about syntax.
- Get feedback early. A mentor, senior or teacher reviewing your work once a month saves months of learning the wrong habits.
Where does a training institute fit? Mostly in years 2 and 3, or right after graduation, when you want structured SQL, Power BI and machine learning with project reviews.
At Fireblaze AI School, our full programs, like the Professional Certification in AI-Powered Data Analytics and the PGP in Data Science and Analytics, are built for graduates and final-year students. Earlier in college, our self-paced Python Programming for Data Science and Data Analytics with Excel courses (₹1,999 each, including GST) fit around college classes.
Pro tip: Don't pay for a full data science course in the first year of college. Learn Python and Excel cheaply first, then invest in a structured program once you know you enjoy working with data.
